Dinner & Doritos.

Just a little night cap to tell you about another evening of kitchen magic in Apartment B. 

We have a Nile River flowing in front of our entry way from a neighboring business’ sump pump, so this afternoon – in order to boycott fording the river – I waited in the car for 20 minutes until Courtney got off the train. I didn’t feel like crossing the damn thing twice as we are going on 4 days of me soaking my $125 dollar leather gladiator sandals. 

The point of this anecdote… It was 630 pm and I WAS STARVING, watch water gush out of a wall every 5 seconds, waiting for Court to get off the train, wishing dinner would somehow miraculously show up in the car, but an Acme trip was a necessity before I could cross the river and step back in the kitchen.

My stomach was burning and eating itself, and once we finished up in the store, the car ride home felt like an eternity. 

How I could cook a dinner in this delirium is beyond me, but here it is:

Je Voudrais Un Napoleon, Si’l Vous Plait!

Let’s make a list of all of that is French in my life.

A David Lebovitz obsession.

 Nana and Tita secretly plotting in French at least 5 times a month.

At least 10 occasions of crying at Carrie and Big on the bridge over the Siene in the SATC finale.

… and every other tv/movie reference that makes my heart go pitter patter (Something Gotta Give, anyone?)

5 years of french classes.

A trip to Paris, as an oblivious 12 year old with a middle part.

And another trip, at 15, to the South of France with some awesome kids.

Two times are never enough, the 3rd time is the charm. Here is a recipe as my pinky promise to the world that in the next 6 – 8 months, my far from french ass (pardon my french) will be on a plane to Europe. First stop, the City of Lights.

Reporting Live from Hurricane Headquarters!

Hi Friends! 

Sunday. WE MADE IT! Armageddon weather week is all over. Woohoo!

So, honestly, I was working so hard the last week – I didn’t really freak out as much as the rest of the world did about the disaster area which was the east coast. I tweeted on Friday that if I had a dollar for every customer that struck up a 2 minute conversation about earthquakes, weather, or hurricane supplies, I could retire right now. And that was a true up until closing time on Saturday.

With the impending end of the world approaching, I spent a lot of time with my little guy this week. We walked every day. I put the gym on the back burner and decided to spoil him with miles of pavement (since the rest of my family doesn’t much care about his under the bed sulking lately).

Destined For The Kitchen.

I am guilty of being a hoarder of almost every card I have received since I was a little one. I found this card this morning- a picture of a minus 3 year old me glue sticked into a drawn kitchen; the intricate workings of my Grandma Pat. As I leafed through my collection, I realized just how much of my life was quietly influenced by food. Pictures of food, paragraphs about meals in far away places, recipes on postcards, and cupcakes themed cards for so many birthday … It all just made a little bit more sense, the kitchen is my soulmate.

Late Summer Stuffed Peppers.

Stuffed peppers are an amazing meal if you have the time to put them together. For these late summer pepps, It took me about an hour of prep and cook time. So stinkin worth it, and frankly it is because I chose to load them up with so many veggies. Depending on how many you can scrounge up – you could have dinner on the table a little sooner.

Magnificent in color, full of nutritiousness, and really fun to make – they are a treat for me each time I get to dig my fork into one.

You can make them in any season, with whatever veggies are fresh at the market – but these late summer ones might be the best. Even though I wish corn would be in season forever, I know it can’t be, and the plum tomatoes I got from Jersey… there is nothing like them. Summer sweetness at it’s finest.

Pesto and Peanut Butter.

Good Morning!

Blue skies outside my window as I write this…

Can’t think of a better omen for a good week… No clouds for a change, thank you Jesus!

Certainly not what it was like last night – or yesterday – with the monsoon that just decided to hang it’s head over my world for the day. And I actually drove around in that crap last night trying to figure out what I was going to put out on the dinner table…. at 9 pm 🙂

After doing a drive-by through the Acme parking lot, avoiding the parking spots, and heading home, I decided to make do with what I had in my fridge.

The Prettiest Saturday Afternoon Sandwiches… almost ever.

Saturdays are my Fridays. The end of my work week. The nights I go home and curl up on my big white couch, light a few candles, click on a quiet Pandora station, and just be. Truly relaxing, letting go of the week, and doing absolutely nothing but what I want to do is how I love to start my weekend.

Tonight, was no different. I wanted to go home and see this face…

So I did. We snuggled, until he felt like going back under the bed with his chicky. Then we walked… well he walked me. So excited that we were back in our routine .. he was practically skipping – and that made me so happy.

But there was something else that made this Saturday, which didn’t start so well, a happy one.

It was Sandwich Saturday! Courtney and I were at Whole Foods and I was inspired, and starving. It is the perfect  place to piece together all the necessities for a few tasty sammiches.

I started by choosing the bread. Each sandwich would be unique.

1. The Wheat Panino – an Italian pressed sandwich with pesto.

2. The Multigrain Ciabatta – a classic turkey, mustard, pickle and swiss sandwich.

3. The Olive Load – the Doggie Bag White Dog Wayne sandwich (!!)

4. The Ezekiel Sesame Bread – a Mediterranean sandwich with hummus.

Room for Improvement.

you already know about yesterday’s attempt to paint away the blues.

As they say, there is always room for improvement – and in this case, that “room” was my bedroom in my new apartment (although I myself need some serious improvement from this pathetic sick sad mess I have been posing to be these past few days). With this room I am  going for the tiny, chic look, and basing it all off of one chair Natalie and I fell in love with while furniture shopping.

I posted this photo to facebook about a week back to ask for help on color choice. 

How ahmazing is this chair?! All Benjamin Moore colors, and all fabulous in their own right…
